How it all began:
In 2014, while developing, writing and delivering accredited computer skill courses, and assisting people back into employment, it became clear that many potential workers were struggling to follow up on labourer jobs due to a lack of a CSCS card and associated qualifications. The Level 1 Award, Health and Safety In a Construction Environment was developed to plug this gap and became a highly successful and engaging course, swiftly achieving full accreditation from NOCN. (National Open College Network)
The CSCS organisation publishes a list of qualifications that they accept as the right level of Health and Safety education for a green card holder. The Level 1 Award, Health and Safety In a Construction Environment is on the list. It is important to note that this course provides a lifetime qualification, it does not have to be repeated. Both companies and individuals should check this carefully. Many alternative courses require the learner to re-sit every 3 years. This is often not disclosed to learners when they apply to join a course. (CSCS requires a re-sit every 5 years, giving learners the opportunity to up date their health and safety knowledge when they renew their card).
Once the Level 1 Award is achieved the learner then has to sit an external test set by The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and there is the need for additional learning. Separate, short, coaching sessions have been developed and include knowledge checks and mock tests. They have proved very successful at boosting readiness for the CITB test.
